Outreach and Initiatives Subteam

The Outreach and Initiatives (OI) Subteam is responsible for creating, promoting, and maintaining connections between the Westside Boiler Invasion robotics team and various communities.Cooperation with the local community is critical for the success of the team. The OI subteam organizes various charitable and promotional events to both educate the community about FIRST and help out the surrounding area.

During the build season each year, the Outreach and initiatives team is responsible for preparing for Regional and Nationals competitions by creating documents for submission to the FIRST program. Some of these awards include:

  • The Chairman's Award: This is the most prestigious award in FIRST. It reflects the achievements and commitments of the team. This award promotes the unique character of our team.
  • The Woodie Flowers Award: This is an award that is about an outstanding mentor of the current season. The students nominate them for this unique form of recognition because of the mentor's inspiration and effort.
  • The Kleiner-Perkins Entrepreneurship Award: This explains how the team exemplies business characteristics.

Recent Events:

In 2010, we are hosting an intramural "Dodge Cancer" charity event to raise money for the Purdue University Center for Cancer Research.

WBI gives presentations at conferences around the state, and the team presents at the State Fair, State House, Boy Scout Jamborees, the Tippecanoe mall and the Taste of Tippecanoe.

The largest local event we organize is the annual Open House.  This event gives our local and corporate sponsors as well as members of the public a chance to see the new robot and get and overview of the game.

In the past six months, we have hosted a story time at the West Lafayette Public Library, we have another story time planned at the same location, and are in the process of planning a story time at the Oxford Public Library.
