The Game
Like in robotics, FIRST plans to release a new game for the FTC each year. This year's game is called "Hot Shot!." In this game, teams must try to have their robots score as many points as possible. Like games in FIRST Robotics Competition, games in the FIRST Tech Challenge are divided into two separate modes: a 30 seconds autonomous mode, during which the robot must move on its own, relying on sensors and onboard programming, and a two minute operator controlled mode in which the robot may be given commands through a radio system. Teams are put into two team alliances which compete against each other.
The alliance scoring the most points wins the match. Points can be scored in three ways in this game:
- Robots can score balls in either of the two goals on the field--the low goal, and the spinning high goal. Balls scored in the low goal are worth 1 point, and balls scored in the high goal are worth 5 points.
- During autonomous mode, balls can be released from the Ball Chutes, and can also be scored in either the low or high goals.
- During the End Game, robots can score points in the off-field goals for 10 points each, and can also score yellow bonus balls, which doubles the score for the balls in that particular goal.
